Well I never!!
I honestly never ever thought that I would be reporting the item of news that has just been sent to me.
But before I divulge it perhaps we should go back a few years, in fact we should go to the beginning of the present Century.
That was the year I was introduced to bowling in South Africa. I had played the harder game of Crown Green bowls in NW England – but we won’t go into that again.
Mea Culpa
If there’s one thing WPBA president designate Ron Delport understands it’s accountability … no one could have served as a Cape Town ombudsman (undertaken with distinction in difficult times) without that thought. It has been only in the past few years Bowls SA executives and those nearer home have been prepared to say mea culpa – Delport fits that bill. During his council days he set a standard he carried into almost three decades of bowls administration excellence.
Well look at me now
In WPBA president-elect Ron Delport’s manifesto is a desire for smartened clubhouses … Strand has already done exactly that.
Not long ago Strand Bowling Club was regarded as “old world” with its no Sunday play and prim and proper members who rarely communicated, seldom entered tournaments and hardly ever produced a player of provincial standard.
