Well did you ever?

The first of two “Christmas blogs” are designed to make you smile; a chance to reflect on life’s absurdities…
“Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities, has the power to make you commit injustices” … Voltaire

The strident chords and words of the Royal Navy’s Hearts of Oak might be in order when Personal Trust/WP try to wrest the Perfect Delivery/BowlsSA Interdistricts Tournament trophies from 19 other hopefuls in March.
“…We’ll fight and we’ll conquer again and again…” rests largely in the men’s division with their skips – the sublime Kevin Campbell [...]

So near, but yet so far in the blink of an eye

Several things happened to me in 1977, significantly, taking up the fine sport of lawn bowls.

I lived in Highland’s North, Johannesburg with my late, to be ex-wife Lisbeth, daughter Alexandra and son Alistair; a Great Dane, a boxer, two cats and a black water spaniel shared our lives.

Even mighty Bowls Australia has felt the worldwide decline in bowls membership and, (just as did South Africa, under astute administrative decisions made by president, Debra Ferguson and her executive) has introduced pro-active measures to improve service delivery to clubs. In Australia’s latest move state and territory associations have recruited 15 community development officers to [...]

Another pleasant lunch on the V&A Waterfront menu, this time with the doyen of the perennial travellers who bring tours to South Africa. For many years I have dined with Stuart Weaving and his right and left hand wife, Dorothy. Good company and food mix rather well; it was also a chance for me to [...]

So near, but too far for South Africa’s Protea men and women lawn bowlers as each finished in third place overall behind England and Scotland (first and second in both gender categories respectively) at the Atlantic Championships.
On the final day of this major warm-up for World Bowls in Australia next year, South Africa knocked on [...]

There’s plenty of life in the “old dog” left. Kevin Campbell, a world champion in 1976, remains all club bowlers’ champion in every respect. Glen’s provincial selector and player, a legend to all, among the most consistent and best players in four decades of bowls proved it when skipping his side to victory in the [...]

Will the real comedians please stand up

“…they don’t blame you so long as you’re funny…”

The Yeomen of the Guard (W S Gilbert),

They have been with us for centuries. They have amused, derided, cajoled and commented on life; they have entertained millions … comedians – the world is never short of a fool.

Nowadays, it seems every unemployed or unemployable actor or actress who trips on the boards turns hopefully to stand-up comedy to make an honest crust.

About a year ago Bill McCarthy, Dennis Brown and Roy Gaylard of Meadowridge decided to design and construct an accurate device to measure green speeds.
They did, it works and is named the Billometer, in honour of Bill McCarthy, the club’s green keeper, who has done much to improve club greens.
Golfers are familiar with the Stimp [...]

BowlsSA drives development; WP, as do all districts, embraces that thought. One of the most vital components of WP vision is ensuring young players are blooded in the U-19s, exposed, encouraged and embraced in the U-25s and finally cast on to the bigger stage with an introduction through the provincial B side on their way [...]
